Why the campus needs the full 87.3 kWh battery system

The 87.3 kWh storage system is built from 9 lithium modules working in unison — turning rooftop solar into evening-peak demand-charge protection for the campus. This is a grid-tied system; it is not a backup/standby system and does not power the buildings during a grid outage.

A $35K-sized battery cannot meaningfully shift solar into the 4–9pm peak — the entire economic case for storage (demand-charge avoidance, peak shaving, solar self-consumption) depends on having enough capacity to cover the campus through the SCE peak window. The 87.3 kWh / 9-module system is sized to that window and is §48 ITC-eligible when charged from solar.
